Welcome to Snells Beach

Civil Defence Mahurangi East

  equip1 cd

The civil defence group covering most of the Mahurangi peninsular was set up in 1988 with the encouragement of councillor Betty Paxton. While based in Snells Beach it covers the area from Sandspit to Martins Bay. The principal aim of the group is to ensure that in the event of a declared emergency there is a local team who can assist full time officers in controlling any response. This corresponds to the Goal of Civil Defence, 1999, which states –

to increase the capability of communities and individuals to prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters.

Civil Defence is linked to Neighbourhood Support (NS) in Snells Beach . The NS network is used as a phone tree in the case of a Civil Defence emergency, such as Adverse Weather Warnings, Tsunami warnings etc. Civil Defence warnings are received both via email and text messages, and forwarded to the groups through the phone tree.

Each month Civil Defence meets on the fourth Tuesday at the community centre to carry out training, or invite a speaker to talk on a topic related to our local needs. We are always looking for new members. The current team of about 25 have various expertise , from registered nurses, engineers, teachers, ham radio, and administration.

The civil defence communications equipment is located at the Police station and is tested weekly.
